Pushakaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping of rivers. It is also known as Pushkara or Pushkar. Also known to be Pushkaralu in Telugu. It is celebrated in the form of worship, spiritual discourse, cultural programs, and devotional songs and music at the 12 major shrines along the bank of 12 major Holy Rivers in the country. Each river associated with a specific Zodiac Sign. And for each year’s festival, the river is based on which Zodiac Sign Jupiter is in.

Thamirabani is a Holy River for Vrushchika Rashi (Zodiac Sign). It is known as ‘Porunai’ in Sangam Literature, flows for 81 km.  And this year, the Pushkaralu which held this year is very special and known to be Maha Pushkaram due to unique Planetary positions. It will take place after 144 years along the course of Thamirabani River. Usually, Thamirabani Pushkaralu is celebrated once every 12 years during ‘Guru Peyarchi’, which is the transition of Jupiter from one Zodiac Sign to another.

Thamirabarani Pushkaram 2018 Dates Timings

Starting Date: 12 October 2018

Ending Date: 23 October 2018.

It will start from 11 October in Tirunelveli and Thootukudi District. This 12-day festival will be inaugurated by Tamilnadu Governor, Banwarilal Purohit at Papanasam. This year lakhs of devotees will come here for Darshan. So special arrangements are needed to be done by Tamilnadu Government. Special arrangements have been made so that devotees could take the Holy dip in the River.

18 places in Tirunelveli and 6 places in Thootukudi are declared safe for devotees to offer worship in the festival. Transport facilities, security arrangements, Parking facilities, etc would be provided to devotees. Devotees will have the facility to have bath at 149 ghats all around the country.
