Rameswaram is famous, because God Rama, after killing the Ravana and other demons, brought back His wife Sita. He wanted to absolve Himself of the sins done by all those killings during the war in Lanka. Shiva was the only God who could do it, So He prayed the God Ramnathswami Shivlingam at this place, after taking bath from the nearby sea, now called Agniteertham.

There are wells named Mahalakshmi, Gayatri, Savitri, Saraswathi, Gavya, Gavyaksha, Nala, Neela, Sethumadhava, Gandhamadhava, Brahmahatya Vimochana, Shanku, Surya, Chandra, Chakra, Shiva, Sarva, Satyamrita, Gaya, Ganga, Yamuna, and Kodi. And each well has a story related to it,  either related to Ramayana or removal of sins. Officially you have to just pay Rs.25/- for a person and walk to the 22 different wells inside the temple.

The Wells are open as per the temple timings. There is staff who will pour the water on you. Unofficially there are people who charge from 150 to 250 per head, they come along with you to all the wells and ensure that you get a bucket from each well.
It’s believed that all your sins are washed away and health regained after the bathing from all these wells. The temperature of the water varied and so did the salinity ranging from neutral to very sweet.
