Dhanushkodi was once a very busy city with a good population, but after the tsunami that happened in 1964 storm, it got washed away and shattered to pieces. After that, the place was never rehabilitated. Currently there only 500 people left living there, of which most of which are fishermen and their families.

The beach of Dhanushkodi is a very popular tourist spot. The beach is extended in around 15 kms. The shore called Mukundharayar Chathram, is considered safe for taking baths and playing along in the high tide sea. The beach bike ride is another adventure activity that is very famous and one can get involved in it.

The best time to visit Dhanushkodi Temple and Beach is in August, July, and May. In Summer it is best to visit Dhanushkodi Beach. This place doesnt have an Railway Station. The nearest station is Rameshwaram. So to reach Dhanushkodi, first you have to reach Rameshwaram, which is around 15 km away.
