The Thanjavur Palace Museum complex is at a distance of 1 km from the Brihadeeswara Temple. It was built by the Nayaks and the Marathas in the 14th Century. It is still the residence of Maratha Family. The complex contains the Palace, the Rajaraja Chola Art Gallery, Saraswathi Mahal Library, and the Bell Tower.

Thanjavur Maratha Palace is the official residence of the Bhonsle family who ruled over the Tanjore region from 1674 to 1855. It was constructed by the rulers of Thanjavur Nayak kingdom during Nayaka Rule.

Art Gallery in Thanjavur or Tanjore is famous for hosting many important antique and artifacts related to the history of the Tanjore District. The cultural heritage of the Tanjore is kept alive in the myriad of paintings, statues, manuscripts that are on display in the Art Gallery. Idols from famous temples like Gangaikondacholapuram Temple and Brihadeshwara Temple are also available in the palace Art Gallery. The works of glass are one of the most well-known pieces of the entire collection of the Art Gallery.

There are beautiful stone sculptures of the Pandya, Chola, Nayaka, and Pallava periods that add attractions among the visitors to the Art Gallery. The bronze idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is so stunning. The painting done on the wood by using diverse vibrant colors and decorated with gold leaves amazes the people. There is also a movie show available about Thanjavur.

Timings of Thanjavur Art Gallery is  9 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 6 PM. 1 PM to 3 PMtimings are for Lunch Break. It remains open all 7 days of the week.
