Tanjore Brihadeeswara temple is one of the most ancient temples in the Country. It situated in the city of Tanjore in Tamil Nadu, India. Thanjavur is named after the legendary Asura “Tanjan”. Brihadeeshwara temple or the Big temple in Tanjore is the best example of excellent workmanship and glory.

It has stood the testimony of time with its magnificent central dome which is a great attraction for one and all.

The Brihadeeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built by King Rajaraja I in the 11th century to celebrate his military victory. The temple is seen as a tribute and also the reflection of the power of RajaRaja Chola I.

The temple is most famous due to its uniqueness as among the greatest glories of the Indian architecture. The main sanctum is known as the ‘Periya Kovil’. It is surrounded by the walls that were added to the building in the 16th century. This brilliant architectural monument has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Temple remains open throughout the day. But precisely it is open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the morning. And evening hours are 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
