Se Cathedral is known to be one of the largest churches in not just India but also in Asia. It is located in Old Goa, at Panjim. Panjim. This majestic beauty of Se Cathedral is dedicated to the St. Catherine of Alexandria. It is also known as St. Catherine’s’ Cathedral. It is known to be one of the oldest and celebrated religious places of Goa. It has a beautiful interior and beautiful courtyard that impress the visitors with its absolute magnificence. Se Cathedral has the most beautiful and marvelous Architecture. It has also been recognized as the Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Se Cathedral Goa History
The Se Cathedral was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese under Alfonso Albuquerque over a Muslim army. He overthrew Muslim Army and captured the city of Goa in 1510. Since it was on the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria, thus Cathedral was dedicated to her. It was ordered by Governor George Cabral to be enlarged in 1552.
Construction of the church began in 1562 and completed in 1619. In 1953, the Cathedral was presented with “The Golden Rose” by Pope Pius XII, which is a gold Ornament. Popes take it as a token of affection. Then this Church was completed in the year 1940, it took almost 80 years for construction because of lack of funds and Spain’s temporary win over Portugal control in Goa.
