The festival of Meenakshi Thirukalyanam celebrates the divine wedding of Meenakshi Amman with Lord Shiva. This grand celebration is held in Madurai, which is known to be the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and is one of the biggest events here. According to the legends it is believed that once Lord Shiva visited Madurai to tie the nuptial knots with Meenakshi and this tradition has been continued since then. This annual event takes place in the famous ‘Meenakshi Amman Temple’ at Madurai. Devotees from every corners of the world come to witness this magnificent event. Meenakshi Thirukalyanam is a part of the renowned Chithirai festival and is held on the 10th day. On this auspicious day thousands of devotees from Madurai and adjoining areas come to the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to witness the celestial wedding of Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva) and Meenakshi (Goddess Parvati). Devotees come to the temples in large numbers to seek the divine blessings from their lords.

  • April 15: Coronation of the Goddess Meenakshi (Pattabhishekam).
  • April 16: Procession of Goddess Meenakshi.
  • April 17: Celestial wedding of God and Goddess in a grandly decorated hall inside the temple.
  • April 18: Car Festival (Ther Thiruvizha). The newlywed deities are paraded through the streets in a decorated chariot.
  • April 18: Edhir Sevai celebration in the evening to welcome Lord Kallazhagar.
  • April 19: Lord Kallazhagar enters the River Vaigai.
  • April 22: Lord Kallazhagar returns to his temple on a palanquin decorated with flowers.
