Madurai Meenakshi Temple is one of the country’s oldest Pilgrimages. It is well known for its brilliant architectural Design. It is more than 400 years old Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundereswara. Throughout the year, festivals are celebrated in this temple. Chitra festival, Avanimoola festival, Masi Mandala festival, Float festival, and Navarathri cultural festival are some of the most popular festivals of the Temple.

Meenakshi Thirukalyanam is the most important festival that is associated with the Temple among all. It is celebrated in April every year. This festival is related to the Marriage of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundreswara. It brings together rural and urban people, deities and mortals, Saivas (those who worship Shiva) and Vaishnavas (those who worship Vishnu).
During the one month period, there are a number of events including the Ther Thiruvizhah (chariot festival) and Theppa Thiruvizhah. Major Hindu festivals like Navratri and Shivrathri are celebrated in the temple. Another festival that is “Avani Moola Utsavam” is a 10-day festival mainly devoted to Sundareswarar to describe his various Thiruvilayadal that means Shiva’s sacred games.
